FORWARD VIEWPOINT :

A VISION FOR YEAR TWO

2018 OUR YEAR OF RESTORATION

HOW DO WE MEASURE VITALITY?

Certainly there is tangible vitality and intangible vitality, but how do we measure vitality in the life of a congregation?  I consider Saint Mark UMC a vitalized congregation, but what is it that makes us vital?   We can look at the tangible evidence: worship attendance, Bible Study and Sunday school attendance, discipleship opportunities, youth and young adult ministries, children’s ministry, effective nursery, pastoral care, community outreach, financial stability, and much more. Yet, it is the intangible that makes a congregation vital; a friendly atmosphere, a can do attitude, a spirit that says God is here, and dynamic worship This is what truly makes a difference in how a congregation is perceived as having vitality.

A vital Christianity is Christ-Centered, a Life in the Spirit, and a Life in Community. We not only have a life in the Spirit, we allow the Holy Spirit to change our life and our lifestyle. Is the church an organization or an organism? I would say that a vital congregation knows that they are a part of an organism. When we talk about Saint Mark UMC, it is more than discussing an organization -  a congregation that is organized a certain way; it is the living, breathing Body of Christ; we are in the organism of God. With us being seen as an organism, we need to be fed and nurtured just like any living organism.  Our job as a church is to ensure that this organism called Saint Mark is thriving, growing and vital.

May we stay faithful to God’s call because our vital future depends on It.  I am so blessed to be your pastor!
